Foundation guide 01
Cake Board Types, Materials & Applications
A product name alone does not tell you how a board will perform. Start with construction, load, exposure and presentation requirements.
Final performance must be confirmed against the approved product specification, sample and intended use condition.
Four structures buyers commonly encounter
Thin card is economical for light use; corrugated drums create thickness with a lightweight core; dense paperboard adds rigidity in a thinner profile; MDF offers high stiffness but changes weight, packing and market considerations.
Match the structure to the application
Individual desserts, standard celebration cakes, tiered cakes and long-format sheet cakes place different demands on the board. Transport and lifting method can matter as much as cake weight.
What to confirm in a sourcing brief
State material structure, finished dimensions, thickness tolerance, surface and edge treatment, colour target, food-contact documentation, retail packing and carton requirements.
